Formula 1 in Adelaide truly was a product of its time. A fantastic event which quickly gained a reputation for being the “party” grand prix and it set the bar for other races around the world to follow in terms of expectation. If you ask Bernie Ecclestone..
F1 raced in Adelaide for 10 years before the Victorian government stole the great race and brought it to Melbourne. This was a move that angered many people in Adelaide and caused some major beef between the two states. This is still discussed today and many fans still think that F1 should be racing on the streets of Adelaide. Recently, the permanent section of the circuit in Victoria Park was in danger of being torn up. But luckily, it won a heritage vote and a piece of history has been saved from the bulldozers. Enjoy.

Thanks for the video mate, very nostalgic. Worked at the 87" GP Adelaide, went to the grand prix 85, 86, 88, 89, 90, 92 and 93. Saw the turbo beasts and then the v12 and v10s – something to do with Adelaide's country – like atmosphere, 80s/90s freedom of society and music combined with a fun little street circuit in a pretty setting. Melbourne is probably more appropriate today with the size of the cars but even though Melbourne is a great event, nothing compares to 80s Adelaide….small country town atmosphere.
Adelaide is better rthen melbourne i hope that.they back in f1
My favorite videos of my home hero Senna are from Adelaide. His last victory was in Adelaide 93 and he moped the floor with a far inferior car.
I went to Melbourne GP in 2019 and quite honestly wasn't hugely impressed with the organisation. Insane queues and so hard getting around, I had better experiences elsewhere.
I remember going as a kid and felt like it was just epic!
I went to the 1988 and the 1995 grand prix in Adelaide. So glad I got to see Senna and Schumacher race.
Was lucky enough to go to every Adelaide race. Craps all over Melbourne.
I went to every race in Adelaide, always gold pit straight. I have memories of saying “gday love” to Elle McPherson and walking feet away from George Harrison when I was given a pit pass.
I love around the corner from Victoria Park. It's a covid testing site now.
Saw the final race when I was 6 (got the day off school!!) First and only F1 event I've been to. The sound!
But there's been talk that they'll bring at least the supercars back to it (there always is) but for now it looks like Assetto Corsa mods and the 98T bouncing around it. Or riding my e-board/skateboards around it IRL 😆
I loved driving the track in Geoff Grammond's Grand Prix computer games – it was amazing. I'm not a big fan of street circuits in general, but Adelaide seem to have a decent flow to it, the turn 90 degree turns in the first sector and then a series of less tight bends in the second sector followed by the high speed bend to get you on to the Brabham straight for the best(and probably only) passing place.
Adelaide Turn One the best first corner is the best corner In The World bar none.
i love this cuircit, the fixed part that is there, i race my bike on quite often. its great
Was a great era and I was lucky enough to be taken there as a kid for 95 GP. The sound of those cars you could hear miles away from the city. I think that party (in the city) vibe and the fact that it was the final (possibly) championship deciding race that made it special. Everyone seemed to be involved in it in the sense that people will talk about it. Melbourne certainly didn't take to it as much as Adelaide, maybe just one of those big city things, with lots of other events during that time of the year. For Adelaide it was "the" big international event for the year, so I think everyone in the city tried to put on a good show.
To host F1 these days you need deep pockets, and Adelaide just doesn't have that. Even Melbournians question the value of the event. I think Adelaide was great for its time, but also I don't think the drivers particularly loved the circuit as much as the locals did, in the modem era of F1 things have changed so probably best to keep it as a fond memory.
The first F1 race I watched was Adelaide 1994 as a little kid. I've been to the Grand Prix in Melbourne is a great event but Adelaide definitely has that something special.
I sold drinks at the first one. Had a pass that got me in to pot lane to sell to the crews – lots of support races.
By the time it left, I had a unit 100 metres from the corner at the end of the straight.
Ooooo the sound! Glorious!!
look up the Adelaide motorsport festival. the state liberal party also killed that. Its an amazing event and even getting to see old f1 cars go around the track was like no other. hopefully labor get in and bring back the AMF.
Pretty sure my uncle still has some core samples of the track surface.
gladiator with russell crowe haircut lookin ass boi
I loved this track on formula 1 on ps1
Perth would be an amazing place for f1 in aus but itll probably never happen.
Id argue that Albert Park is THE most forgettable circuit on the calendar………maybe its because its the(usually) the first race of the year…..nobody talks about Albert park period
Adelaide Was Way Better Than Melbourne!
You didn't even mention 1986 Nigel's tyre blow up.
Adelaide was my top 1 list of street circuits in F1, until Jeddah came
Adelaide has always been objectively better than Melbourne. Every aspect of it. Melbourne can never replicate what Adelaide had going with the grand prix
Australian nostalgia has set in
haha Adelaide Sector 1 is like 6 90 degree corners. BORING Keep it in Melbourne or move it Bathurst.
Born in early 80s, lived about 10km from Adelaide CBD, F1 in Adelaide was part of my childhood.
Loved being able to hear the V10s roaring through an open window whilst hearing Murray Walker commentate on the TV.
Yes, annoyed at "Hic"toria for "stealing" the race but South Australia has always had a rivalry with Victoria…
…and the Vics have always had a rivalry with everyone, take their battle with New South Wales for Covid outbreaks.
Adelaide made the race a great festival, being a large country town feel, Melbourne turned it up and if I recall had competition from Sydney and Brisbane/Gold Coast to keep the race.
I would love to have had a co-exist with hosting like Germany had with Hockenheim and Nürburgring alternating years but that isn't reality.
Maybe the Shahin's and their Bend Motorsport Park will steal it back.
I have just one thing to say about the "Good old days":
In the good old days you heard something like "The Michael wouldn't have left me the space to do that, right?"
followed by laughter of the room and not a 5 second penalty.
But honestly that has nothing to do with the times back than and everything to do with how it is now.
I went Adelaide GP in 91-92 and at least 1/2 dozen Melbourne GPs. I think Melbourne is a better track but I had more fun in Adelaide.
I mean it helps a lot that F1 and their cars back then were just simply better. Modern day F1, it's boring over-regulation and it's American-truck-sized cars can make even great tracks bad.
I was born in 94 and I really enjoyed the 90s era of F1 because it was at a time where everything was evolving and expecting what the new millennium would bring to us also you forgot to mention Mansell's tyre failure in 86 and Prost winning the title.
The good thing about the movement to Melbourne gave us the Adelaide 500 event in 1999 which became either on par or bigger than the Grand Prix event
If f1 does return to Adelaide, turn 8 would need to change.
street circuits are shit
I really appreciate you including the shotty stuff that the government was trying to do, brings more attention to it so thank you!
I wish F1 would come back to Detroit, Michigan, USA. I know it's not going happen but Detroit is my hometown. I saw my first F1 race in Detroit. I was thrilled my Dad took me to the race. He worked for a supplier (I remember he always made sure I was dressed up, this was F1 after all). We always had great seats. I got to see Senna and Prost in person. Literally, I was about 5 feet from being able to reach out and touch them. I got see Senna driving the black and gold John Player Special and Prost driving for ELF in the yellow and white. Jackie Stewart ran into me and knocked me down but it was okay (after all it was Jackie Stewart…OMG!). The racing was never the same after F1 left and the Indy cars took to the streets.
Excellent video. Except for the bit about Albert Park being the best place to hold the race now. Albert Park is a horrible track. Boring corners with no overtaking opportunities and no straight that’s long enough. The lake is putrid too. Adelaide was and still is the best place to hold the race but the politicians over here are too soft.
And people from Melbourne get upset that Sydney wants to steal formula 1. Kinda Ironic.
Bet that the only dislike is a Hamilton fan
Should only have 2 street circuits a season, that dont add points to the championship, because the the races are pointless
