Our rewatch rebounds this week as Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum review Season 2 Episode 7: LINEAGE.
Not only do we get to review a beautifully written and directed episode of Smallville, but we’re also joined by two very important people to the show.
First – it’s been a long time coming, but Annette O’Toole finally joins us! She shares everything about her experience as Martha Kent, questions she had about Clark as a mother of small children at the time, and how she prevented the Kent farm from going up in a blaze.
We also bug creator Al Gough about the difference in age between Clark and Lex, how the next couple episodes really picked up after the Redux dud, and why Lineage stood out amongst others.
Not only that, but Tom remembers his enjoyment for the adoption storyline scenes and Michael talks about how we really see the conniving and treacherous side of Lionel Luthor start to emerge in this episode.

LINEAGE (S2E07) with ANNETTE O’TOOLE!! Preventing a Barn Fire, Clark’s Adoption & Meteor Shower Flashbacks #smallville #talkville #season2
Love it. 3 Rose Episode, this and the next
Lucas is played by Paul Westley from the vampire diaries
What a fantastic episode!! I'm so enjoying rewatching Smallville with all of you. Hope we get all 10 seasons! ❤
Noo.. The episode is called: Prodigal
When lucas returned.. Played by paul wesley who got sooo famous for the vampire diaries👏 ian too.. As the creepy guy Adam who was lana roommate.. Bleeding from the eyes was too much😅
Interesting Michael says spaceship may be made of light material. When Pete finds spaceship he says it's heavy and Clark probably uses some superpower strength to adjust
Definitely a 2 rose episode. 🌹 🌹. I’m glad we got Rosenbaum back on board and Tom gave it high praise. We get a lot of insight in this epsisode about Clark’s origin and how the Kent’s dealt with an alien dropped in their lap, or cornfield 🌽. Pivotal episode in the ethos. Only wish the ending was a little better. Love the podcast
First i love seeing Annette. Did anyone notice Linal looked at the locket.
Annette is the tv mom greatest of all time(goat). Such thin and forgettable material would have been lost at times, but damn did she always get to the meat of scenes. Criminally underused, but you'd never know it because she ate in scenes, ever damn crumb. Bless her. For anyone with a strained relationship with their own mother, she was the one you wished you had and her honesty in scenes helped to give the moments people like me miss out on. I love that woman.
I love the relationships you all have.
I thought I remembered in an early episode, maybe even the pilot, that the Kents said Clark was a family member, like a cousin or something, that they were taking in….
43:50 I think Tom is a little confused there. Martha was disappointed because Clark threw a party, she was disappointed because his impulsive son had been "drugged" with red kryptonite and married Alicia IN SEASON 4 🤣🤣🤣
18:23 maybe the connection is that Lucas was already born and named, but by being a bastard son and the potential scandal that can cause, Lionel hide his whereabouts while Rachel though that the little baby being adopted was Lucas. Lionel never told anyone what really happened with Lucas
09:50 mmmh I disagree on that one. Remember, in one of the flashbacks when Jonathan in driving a truck with Martha, Lionel, Lex and little Clark you can see that Lex is like 10 or 11 years old and little Clark looks like he's 2. The meteor shower occurred in 1989, then the show begins in 2001. So I'm gonna risk here and say that there's at least an 8-year difference between Clark and Lex. Or maybe 9
Thank you for this show!!
Annette making me tear up at work
😭😭
Аннет прекрасна 💜
Хороший эпизод.
Mom that I always wanted.. Yup.
Micheal and Tom…Please tell Annette she was 100% awesome as Martha (and Lana in Superman III). I did not grow up with a mom, she showed me how awesome Moms are.
Annette is completely correct, the show's producers dropped the ball with NOT having Christopher and Annette have some tender screen time together.
I remember hearing that Reeves was going to be on the show and looking forward to him and Annette being together again, but it NEVER happened…I was disappointed.
***Saw EACH Superman movie on opening night, big Superman fan, and Annette was a bright shinning moment in Superman III.
Never missed an Ep of Smallville and never miss you Show on YouTube.
Damn high ratings it’s good but not that good. I’d stick with that 1 rose
1 rose for me guys
HEAT VISION was always heat vision and not lasers – in superman 1 and 2 they couldn't do it properly. but heat is done in Smallville very well.
Is this the third thumbnail for this episode I've seen?
Why do you guys use a VHS tape for putting on smallville? If I'm not mistaking DVDs were already a thing when it came out.
just wanted to make a suggestion about Ryan's place in the show. I feel it's difficult for him being next to two giants. You guys could create more space for him to jump in and make an active effort to include him. When he does speak, I'd suggest trying not to put words in his mouth or interrupt him. When you do include him, make it about important things, not just trivial questions – just what I'd do. Make him feel as if he is just as important as the two giants, because he is.
Sure, Ryan needs to be more assertive and get in there, but the two giants also need to do their part to create space and include him. If ya'll did, he may be more intrinsically motivated to participate and connect with the show, and he would enjoy it more too. Ryan has a fresh perspective, and when he does have his space and time to share, it really does add good energy and knowledge to the podcast.
Loved hanging with you guys in Smallville back in the day. Loved and needed you back then. And love hanging with you guys now in the podcast.
I’ve burned through 4 seasons of this in the past 2 months lol. It’s so easy to do.
Can’t wait to see Allison Mack as a surprise guest!
This was a good episode! I’ve always wandered how people can work with someone so long and walk away and not see each other again or for years, but I think about so many people I worked with over the years and how close we were at the time and now I have no idea where they are or what they are doing.
I love Micheal saying "I try to let things go, if you can't control it let it go!" It's exactly the opposite of what Lex Luthor would think!
I loved this episode of the podcast, I've been waiting for Anette since the beginning and the relationship forged between you and the current conversation brought me to tears. I loved seeing them together. 🌹🌹🥀
It's funny how on the Inside of You podcast Michael was trying not to drop any f-bombs when Annette was on, and SHE ended up dropping one. And here, Tom was trying not to drop one in front of his TV-mom.
