After over 18 months of closure, Adelaide Metro’s Gawler Railway line finally reopened to the public today (12 June 2022)! This morning I travelled on the first ever electric passenger train service from Adelaide to Gawler Central, let’s see if there’s any improvement in passenger experience.
The Gawler Lions Club usually holds a Sunday Market every week at Gawler Railway Station. To celebrate the newly electrified rail line, everyone was offered a free sausage sizzle. The Department of Transport also organised activities and giveaways from 9am-11am. Wanna see what activities were available this morning? Find out in this video!!

French valitadors, like in Warsaw😃
Where did the train continue on going in 1968
great video rory, keep up the good work. my wife just died and you are keeping me on this mortal plain. alihamdullilah
I ride this line to and from work Monday to Friday. I am still yet to experience the electric trains. We’re still waiting on delivery. It will be great when the diesels are retired. Smelly noisy and slow. They have reached their used by date. Great video.
Adelaide station is definitely not dark and depressing, I’ve seen much worse. It kinda happens with underground stations.
A very good video to watch if visiting Adelaide & wanting to use there rail system to get around. I stayed in Adelaide on a holiday & found there bus lines to be excellent. Bus drivers & Adelaide people were to friendly & helpful if unsure & needed help. I didn’t use the rail system. Excellent information as always. Cheers Lynne Victoria 🇦🇺🐨👍🏻
So these new trains faster then the old ones?
The problem with Adelaide? Its too close to Perth
8:30 – this is the epitome of SA Infrastructure Planning – they electrified the Noarlunga/Seaford Line (south bound from the CBD) first, but didn't electrify the route to the maintenance facilities… sadly, not unexpected from a state known for making a 1-way highway that swapped directions twice per day and had an opposite schedule for weekends and public holidays
I live right next to the tracks the electric trains are a god send.
Seems like most rail around Australia is better than nsw lol, just travelled around the UK on train was very decent and pretty punctual.
Wonderful vdo brother…..love it….gr8 place to visit..greetings from Calcutta,India
Hi Rory, You've excelled yourself again. I commented some time back that you might be interested in Taiwan Trains. This Saturday July 9@7.30pm SBS has a doco on the scenic railways of Taiwan. If you miss it I'm sure it will be streamed & I'm sure you will make a better one about Taiwan rail travel in the future. Robert
This service returning was a godsend. I had been using the J1 for Elizabeth shops visits for the last 18 months.this in conjunction with 560 connection from Salisbury saves me 10 minutes on a weekend and less than that on a weekday.
And… the line is closed again. That didn't take long.
I think that Australia’s railways should be electrified to cut down on Co2 emissions. Especially with railway lines in cities that aren’t electrified to be electrified and new and current trains to serve the newly electrified lines.
Nice video! I miss your flight reviews tho would be cool if you could do one soon no rush
Ah…good ol' Rory Ding….riding wombats and battling death adders to give us Europeans a lesson in Australian public transport. Keep up the good work 😁😁
Are you aware if the sleepers on the Gawler line are built for dual gauge like those on the Seaford line?
This might be relevant if there is the possibility of a standard gauge electrified passenger service to Mount Barker! It could be part of a grander plan to standardise all the electrified lines in Adelaide!
Hey Rory you should go on the 3801 Blue Mountains flyer train from central to Katoomba and return on the 17 of September I will be there love for you to do that 😀🙏🏼👍🏻❤️✔️
Great video! Hope to see you back over west for when our airport line opens 🙂
Don’t listen Rory to how they are saying the pronunciation of Gawler. You did well! I’ve noticed the train line says it a similar way to you
Love the videos btw!!
Sorry mate your pronunciation of Gawler is way off it's Gaw ler not goo ler !
this was one of the best Adelaide metro Information video I have ever seen!!! any infomation on outer harbour electrifications???
What is funny is that the 3000 class is a diesel version of an electric train and the acity 4000 class are an electric version of a diesel train. Also maybe there is an opportunity to run the 3000 series to Balaklava from gawler if the line still exists.
Great video weekdays I like element of surprise whether getting a diseal or electric but don't see why diseals had to change colours
So pleased to have found your channel. I like all the other videos in your list will get to them eventually. I am subscribed. I was always surprised how long it took Adelaide to get electrification. I still remember in the 70's Adelaide's surburban rail was all diesel and seems that continued into the 2000's! I did one trip during my visit to Adelaide in 1972 to Bridgewater if that still exists. Thanks for an interesting video.
Why did you get a concession card?
How NOT to design, build and operate a public transport network!
Ugly, inefficient and massively inconvenient. Only transport engineers can manage to come up with this.
Thanks Rory
Rory Ding
Nice trains Rory Ding. At least they are built in Gods promised land Australia.
Glad to see all the job is finally in service. Was part of the commissioning crew in January and February getting the signalling sorted. The experience actually promoted me to change career tracks.
Love these videos buddy
Verry Verry Good well edited, accuraté, filméd unt produced documentary.
Only One Glaring Error.
The liné is from Adelaide to Gawler NOT Goolwa.
I think you mistook Gawler for Goolwa which is far down south near Victor Harbor.
Othér-Wisé Excellenté
👍👍
1:10 is brisbane not diesel?
It is very unlikely that I am ever going to travel on the Gawler line, but I still really enjoyed this.
very good – other countries foreign images
If you are interested in our rolling stock have a look at the 2000 class railcars taken out of service in 2015, honestly such individual units they were quite peculiar in design haha!
Fantastic to see another line get electrified. Seems like this has been long in the running. Awesome video mate, cheers.
So Adelaides DMUs are based on/similar to Melbourne's electric sets, but their EMUs are similar to/based on Melbourne's diesel sets.
Thanks Mr… a map of the train line as you traveled would also have been advantages.. thank you for your efforts!
Nice train. But 1 hour for only 41 km? That is not fast. They could have updated the track, so higher speeds were possible. Tnx for sharing!
Thanks for the good video Rory.’Yes l love bombardier trains
Those trains won't last long on that line lol 😆
Excellent presentation. I’ve subscribed.
From California.
Gawler not gooooler
The high-frequency stations are designed to work with the low frequency stations in between. If you want to get to a low-frequency station you can travel to the nearest high frequency station either before or after your chosen station get off and board the next train heading in the correct direction knowing that it will stop at the station you require. It was deliberately designed to be an interleaved train service. Because of this a train will go in each direction for a low frequency station once every 30 minutes. However these trains are spaced 15 minutes apart. This means that a train will stop at a low-frequency station headed north and 15 minutes later a train will stop at the same station headed south.
